To the Editor:
Rahway Food For Friends, a New Jersey nonprofit corporation, has been serving the Rahway area for more than 20 years feeding the homeless, hungry and needy families.
The group feeds more than 200 families per month via the Food Pantry program. Free clothing and personal items are distributed to the patrons. We receive referrals from the county social services to feed new applicants they receive and we accommodate them all.
Our program is barely surviving and we are in dire need of help. We have a minimal amount of donations coming in and we need to ensure we can continue to feed the community, especially for the upcoming holidays. We are the only food pantry in Rahway and we provide 80-100 meals per Saturday of each month at the Soup Kitchen. With the declining economy the need for food has increased in the community yet funding has decreased with the downsizing and closing of local businesses who used to donate.
We have applied for our 501( c) (3) and are awaiting the government for the determination. We are truly struggling as we are 100% volunteer based and no salaries are in place. 100% of all donations are used on the food pantry program and soup kitchen program to ensure the homeless, hungry and needy families get food first.
We are located at 1221 New Brunswick Ave., Rahway.
Our upcoming food pantry distribution is on Oct. 28, at 10 a.m.
Our Thanksgiving Dinner is on Nov. 28, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (a buffet-style dinner with all the trimmings)
Our Christmas Dinner with Santa is on Dec. 21, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (This dinner with Santa includes photos for the children who are homeless and unable to do so, gifts are given, a skit performed, songs and a story with Mr. and Mrs. Claus)
Our website is rahwayfoodforfriendsnj.org.
Our motto is: “Feeding the Whole Person At Rahway Food For Friends,” we have an open door policy and feed the neighboring town patrons as well. If there is a need for food we are happy to oblige. Currently, we are afraid to say this might not happen.
